Early life

Bill Geist, broadcast journalist, and a newspaper columnist, and Jody Geist, a social worker, were Geist’s parents when he was born in Evanston, Illinois. The Academy Award-winning producer of the documentaries ‘O.J.: Made in America’ and ‘The Last Dance,’ Libby Geist Wildes, has an older brother named Geist. He is Herbie Lewis’ great-grandson, who played for the ‘Hockey Hall of Fame-inducted Detroit Red Wings’ and was a former star player.

Geist first met Christina Sharkey while both were students at Ridgewood, ‘New Jersey’s George Washington Middle School.’ He was the basketball and football team captain at ‘Ridgewood High School,’ where they first started dating. His teams won the state football championship in 1991. Both the National Honor Society and New Jersey Boys State elected him. Geist earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and French with honors from ‘Vanderbilt University’ in 1997, where he also served as editor of the student newspaper, ‘The Vanderbilt Hustler.’


At the beginning of his career, Geist worked for CNN Sports Illustrated as an editor and producer before moving on to CNN Sports as a field producer and reporter, where he covered the Super Bowl, The Masters, and the NCAA Final Four.

After Don Imus was let go in late April 2007, Geist almost immediately started stepping in as a co-host on MSNBC’s 6-9 a.m. time slot. In September 2007, Geist joined Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski as a permanent co-host of Morning Joe. Late in July 2009, Geist started presenting his own 30-minute show, Way Too Early with Willie Geist, which debuted on MSNBC at 5:30 a.m. before Morning Joe.
