Patrick was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 12, 1988. Matt completed his schooling in Illinois at Waubonsie Valley High School. He was also a part of the 2004 MTV Nike Battlegrounds Series and played for Chicago at age 16. He was a college basketball player at the University of Arkansas. Beverley starred in 2007’s Hoop Reality with Arthur Agee. Patrick attended the University of Arkansas.

He played in the Ukrainian Second Division alongside Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk during the 2008-09 season. He played in the Greek Basket League 2009-10 with Olympiacos Piraeus. He then played three more years in Ukraine, Greece, and Russia before moving to the NBA. In 2019, the Los Angeles Lakers selected him with the 42nd overall draft pick.
