Early Life  

On May 20, 1979, Craig Melvin was born in Columbia, South Carolina. He has a younger sibling named Ryan and an older sibling named Lawrence, who died in 2020 from colon cancer. Lawrence was a clergyman. Melvin was chosen to lead Key Club International as its first Black president in high school. He attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, for his higher education, where he graduated with a bachelor’s in government.

Career Beginnings

While still in high school, Melvin started his broadcasting career by working for WIS-TV in Columbia, South Carolina, an NBC affiliate. From 1995 to 1997, he filled the “Our Generation Reporter” position there. Later, in 2001, Melvin returned to WIS-TV as a producer and news photographer. He later advanced to the role of a reporter for the morning news team and began creating “Craig Cam” live pieces. Due to his success in his positions, Melvin was elevated to the work of news anchor, first for the weekend morning and evening newscasts and later for the weekday newscasts. He was well-known at the station for producing documentaries on Columbia’s homelessness and educational system.
