The-Dream was born on September 20, 1977, in Rockingham, North Carolina. He and his mother relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, when he was two years old, and while there, he picked up the trumpet, guitar, and drums. When The-Dream was only 15 years old, his mother passed away, and soon after, he started creating music. He moved in with his concrete mason grandfather after his mother passed away.

The-Dream created the song “Everything” for the B2K album “Pandemonium!” in the early 2000s, and R&B producer Laney Stewart assisted him in obtaining a publishing agreement.
