L.L. Cool J was born in New York on January 14, 1968. He suffered a series of disturbing events during his childhood. When he was four years old, he observed his father shooting his grandfather and mother. He fell in love with music when he was nine years old. He was penning lyrics and creating songs using some D.J. equipment that his grandpa had given him. His current stage name, L.L., was created by him and one of his best friends when he was fifteen. Ladies Love Cool James, often known as Cool J. When he was 16, he met N.Y.U. student Rick Rubin gave him his big break in the music industry.

Since Rick was a big fan of L.L.’s music, he attempted to sign him to a record label. They collaborated on the song “I Need a Beat,” which they then forwarded to Russell Simmons, artist management. Rick and Russell co-founded the renowned def jam recordings in the same year that Simmons fell in love with the single. L.L.’s first album, “Radio,” was the label’s first long-playing record and was released in 1985 after Def Jam secured a distribution agreement with Columbia/C.B.S. Records. Early Life

Smith started rapping at the age of 10 after being influenced by the “The Treacherous Three” hip-hop group. In 1984, Smith, aged sixteen, began creating demo tapes at his grandparents’ home. He received a US$ 2,000 present from his jazz musician grandpa that comprised 2 turntables, a recording mixer, and a speaker. As another demonstration of her encouragement for his musical pursuits, his mother bought him a Korg drum machine with her tax refund. In the year 1985, he released an album titled “Radio” which earned a great amount of commercial success. The album sold over 1 million copies by the year 1987. His second album was released in the year 1987 was “Bigger and Deffer” and was one of the best-selling albums of his career. “Mama said knock you out” was his fourth studio album which went double platinum. He simultaneously started acting in the year 1991 by starring in “the hard way and Toys” and also released “14 shots to the Dome”. He appeared in various shows like Rollerball, “Deliver Us from Eva”, S.W.A.T and “Minehunters”.  He appeared in the NBC comedy “In The House” as well. In 1995, with the album “Mr. Smith” he made a comeback.

Boys II Men appeared on several tracks on the album, and “The Lady in My Life” by Michael Jackson was also covered. The music video would land LL a Grammy and become one of the first hip-hop videos ever to air on VH1. More than 2 million copies of this album were sold. His following album was Phenomenon, which went platinum and debuted at number one on the Billboard album charts. In 2000, he released G.O.A.T., which also went platinum. The ninth studio album of LL Cool J, “10,” was released in 2002. On January 21, 2016, he received a star on “The Hollywood Walk of Fame.”
