Early Life

Mark Calaway, aka the Undertaker, was born in Houston on March 24 in 1965. His parent’s name is Frank Compton Calaway and Betty Catharine Truby. He grew up with his brothers Timothy, Paul, Michael, and David.

As a Walt Rip High School student, he played basketball and football. After graduating in 1983, he enrolled in a basketball scholarship at Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas. Calaway enrolled in Texas Wesleyan University’s Fort Worth campus in 1985. Mark left school in 1986 to concentrate on a career in sports, and before opting to focus on professional wrestling, he briefly explored playing professional basketball in Europe. He participated in basketball and football while attending Waltrip High School.

Career

Regarding Calaway’s beginnings in the sport, there are two urban legends: the first is that he made his ring debut in 1984. He enrolled in Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas, on a basketball scholarship. Calaway left school in 1986 to focus on a career in sports, and before choosing wrestling, he explored his career in basketball in Europe. He was reintroduced to wrestling on February 2, 1989, under Dutch Mantel’s direction, as The Master of Pain, a previous murderer.

On October 5, 1989, Calaway became the new owner of the WCWA Texas Heavyweight Championship after Eric Embry gave it up. Jim Ross, the announcer, described him as a malevolent figure who wore primarily black ring gear and had a penchant for keeping snakes as pets.

After learning that no one would ever pay to watch him perform from company booker Ole Anderson during conversations about contract renewal, Calaway started to wonder about his future in WCW. Calaway made multiple attempts to join the World Wrestling Federation in response to this. One strategy Calaway used to get a meeting with McMahon was to persuade people who knew McMahon or other WWF performers to suggest him to the organization. Following his departure from WCW, he briefly re-joined the USWA to participate in a contest to crown a new USWA Unified World Heavyweight Champion. Calaway won the first round against Bill Dundee but failed to Jerry Lawler in the semi-finals.

1989 – 2000

Calaway was married to his first wife, Jodi Lynn, from 1989 until 1999. Calaway joined WWF in October 1990. He was hired to play the character McMahon had given him as his “brainchild,” previously known as Kane the Undertaker. On March 24, 1991, The Undertaker debuted at Wrestle Mania VII. Jake “The Snake” Roberts, a friend of The Undertaker, tried to use a steel chair to strike Miss Elizabeth, the manager, and wife of ‘Macho Man Randy Savage, in February 1992, but The Undertaker stopped him, turning him around for the first time.

At the Royal Rumble in January 1994, a casket match for the WWF Championship marked the end of the feud. The WWF hyped purported sightings of The Undertaker by using film clips of unrelated people claiming to have seen him in the wake of the death angle at the Royal Rumble while he wasn’t there. The Undertaker was revealed from his Monster of the Opera-like facial mask in the grand finale of the Royal Rumble in January 1996 during a WWF Championship battle against Bret Hart.

During this stage in his career, The Undertaker vehemently denied involvement in the family’s fatal arson attack. However, Bearer insisted that he had evidence of The Undertaker’s younger brother Kane, who was still alive and well despite being burned and scarred. Despite Bearer portraying himself as The Undertaker’s constant source of psychological anguish during his stint as champion, The Undertaker was still capable of securing successful season defenses against Steve Austin.

2000 – Present

The Undertaker and Kane regrouped as the Brothers of Destruction in 2001 and once more challenged the WWF Tag Team Championship. They had a chance to win the No Way Out title. The Undertaker returned triumphantly at the Royal Rumble in January 2006 as Kurt Angle celebrated winning the World Heavyweight Championship over Mark Henry. The Undertaker achieved his first Royal Rumble victory in January 2007.

The Undertaker started a new chapter in his ongoing feud with Shawn Michaels in the late 1990s. In 2010, he married Michelle McCool, a former wrestler.

Later, in 2012, their daughter, Kaia Faith Calaway, was born. The couple also adopted Kolt, their younger son. The Undertaker was also allowed to be admitted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2014, but he turned it down because he believed the moment wasn’t right. The Undertaker officially announced his departure from professional wrestling on June 21, 2020, in the concluding episode of the documentary Undertaker: The Last Ride.
