John Elway was born on June 28, 1960, in Port Angeles, Washington. Eleven minutes after his birth, his twin sister Yana joined his older sister Lee Ann, who was born eighteen months earlier. Elway’s father and college football coach, Jack Elway, supported his family by encouraging his children to play sports from an early age. The Elway brothers got along well and were encouraged by a healthy rivalry. Elway later recalled that one of his fondest memories of his childhood was playing with his sisters. According to Rocky Mountain News’ Michael Bee Dunn, before the twins could walk or talk, Jack Elway had a special bond because they “spoke together in a unique language that the twins have.”
The Baltimore Colts were the first overall pick in the 1983 NFL Draft, representing the quarterback class. Of the six quarterbacks available, Elway was the first choice. Early Life
Jack Elway and Janet (née Jordan) Elway gave birth to twins Elway and Jana on June 28, 1960, in Port Angeles, Washington. Jack was the head coach of Port Angeles High School at the time. Sister Lee Ann, a year older than his twin, was part of a family of five. The following year they moved to Aberdeen, Washington, where Jack headed the Grays at Junior College at Community College, where he spent five seasons as a football coach. Elway spent most of his formative years in Pullman, Washington, and Missoula, Montana, with his father serving as his assistant coach in Washington and Montana, respectively.
Jack joined the Palouse Neighbor Idaho team in February 1976 but was named head coach of Southern California Division II Northridge, California, a month later. After his family moved after his freshman year at Pullman High School, John spent his last three years of high school football at Granada Hills High School in Granada Hills, where he played Tom Richards and Jack his Neumeier’s. Despite the team’s abysmal 4-7 record, Elway had another strong season in 1981, placing 7th in the NCAA with 20 touchdown passes.
