On February 10, 1930, Robert Wagner Jr. was born. Hazel, his mother, worked as a phone operator. Ford lacquer, a product used in the automotive industry for dashboards and paint, was sold by his father, Robert Sr., a traveling salesman who amassed a comfortable fortune. They moved to Los Angeles when he was 7 years old. His father had accumulated enough money to live comfortably in pleasant Southern California. They even spent over a year building a home specifically for them in Bel Air with views of the Bel Air Country Club.

Before the family, Robert Jr. made the trip to California. He was taken from Hollywood Military Academy and put on a train by himself. Throughout the four different military schools Robert attended in Southern California, several of his classmates were the kids of well-known celebrities. Wagner graduated from Saint Monica Catholic School in 1949 and was awarded a certificate.

Career

Robert started working as an extra in the 1950s. He debuted in 1950’s “The Good Years” in an uncredited role. At just 20 years old, he signed with Twentieth Century Fox. The 1951 World War II film “Halls of Montezuma” was his debut production for Fox. In a supporting part, Richard Widmark joined Wagner. He played a supporting role in another movie that year, “The Frogmen,” which again starred Widmark. In 1952’s “With a Song in My Heart,” Wagner debuted as a shell-shocked soldier in a brief but impactful role.

By 1953, he was starring in films like”Prince Valiant,” “Beneath the 12-Mile Reef,” “Between Heaven and Hell” and “A Kiss Before Dying,” and after playing several other modest roles in various movies. He played the lead in the famous Western “Broken Lance” in 1954. Paramount then utilized Wagner for the 1956 movie “The Mountain,” where he played Spencer Tracy’s brother. He starred in the critically panned movies “Between Heaven and Hell” and “The True Story of Jesse James” for Nicholas Ray while still at Fox. By appearing in his then-wife Natalie Wood’s 1960 film “All the Fine Young Cannibals,” he attempted to kick-start his career.
