Early Life

In Surrey, England, on March 30, 1945, Eric Patrick Clapton was born. His upbringing was, to put it mildly, peculiar. Patricia, who gave birth to Eric at the age of 16, was too old to care for him, so his parents took over. From an early age, Eric thought his mother was his sister and his grandparents were his parents.

Shortly after Eric was born, his father, Edward Walter, a Canadian soldier, was called up to serve in the military. Although his father had moved back to Canada after the war, he was not around when Eric was a child. Eric’s mother left her son with her parents when he was still a young child and relocated to Germany after being married to another soldier.

When Eric turned 13, he received his first guitar, but after struggling to master it for a while, he gave up. He picked up the guitar again around the age of 15, and this turned into a form of escape for him.

Eric Clapton graduated from ‘Hollyfield School’ in 1961. He enrolled in ‘Kingston College of Art’ after high school but was later dismissed for having a sole focus on music. Eric had no trouble with this because people were already beginning to notice his guitar skills. After graduating from college, he occasionally began busking, and his first public performance was with Dave Brock.

In 1962, the two would play in a number of bars in Surrey, and when Eric was 17 years old, he joined his first band, The Roosters. Before Eric left, the band played seven shows with Casey Jones and the Engineers in 1963.

Career

Eric began playing in a group named the Yardbirds in October of 1963. Before “For Your Love,” their first huge song was released, he played with them for two years.

Due to tensions with the bassist, Eric decided to leave the band and pursue other chances.

After a year of playing with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, he left the group. He had joined them in April of 1965. He then became a member of Cream, a tiny group that put out six albums before disbanding in 1968.

The following year, Eric made the decision to start his own band and enlisted Ginger Baker, Rick Grech, and Steve Winwood as members. Unfortunately, his new band, Blind Faith, only performed for seven months before calling it quits.

Derek and the Diamonds, which Eric later founded, released the song “Layla.” After completing the production of their second album in 1971, Derek and the Diamonds continued to perform for a year before splitting up.

Three years later, Eric put together a touring band and recorded “I Shot the Sheriff,” a Bob Marley cover song, which became his first #1 hit. He chose to take a hiatus from music after recording his first solo song in order to undergo rehab due to his alcoholism.

Eric released film scores after leaving rehab, and after receiving numerous accolades during this time, he also released the well-received “Unplugged” CD.

Jimmy Page, Phil Collins, Sting, and many more celebrities have joined him onstage or in other projects.

Eric withdrew from international touring in 2015 after more than 3,000 shows during his career. Eric Clapton Net Worth is US$ 450 Million as of January 2023.
