Ruah was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Portuguese Jewish parents practicing ENT surgery; her mother is an otolaryngologist. Ruah’s family returned to Portugal when she was five years old. She went to St Julian’s School there and debuted in telenovelas at sixteen. She triumphed in a dance competition on Portuguese television.

At 18, Ruah emigrated to the UK and graduated from London Metropolitan University with a Bachelor of Arts in performing arts. She returned to Portugal and continued with her acting career before relocating to New York City in 2007 to attend the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

Ruah claimed to have grown up in a Sephardic and Ashkenazi household; her mother is of Russian, Ukrainian, and Portuguese Jewish origin, while her father is of Portuguese-Jewish ancestry. She is a citizen of both Portugal and the United States.

Career

When Ruah was a teenager, she began appearing in Portuguese soap operas. At age 16, In the television opera Jardins Proibidos, she played Sara.

Ruah relocated to London at age 18 to pursue college. She went back to Portugal to continue her acting career after graduating.
