Early Life

Tracy Chapman was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 30, 1964. Her parents split when she was four, leaving her mom to grow her. Tracy had a natural musical skill, so when she was barely three years old, her mom, who didn’t have much money, bought her a ukulele. At 8, she first picked up the guitar and started singing. She started playing the clarinet when she was in grade 6. African American Chapman grew up in an environment of racial conflict and prejudice brought on by the desegregation of public schools. Being on welfare, she experienced racial abuse, bullying, and assaults at school.

Chapman has raised a Baptist, graduated from an Episcopal high school, and was given admission to the A Better Chance program, which sponsors students attending college-preparatory high schools outside their hometowns. She completed her education at Connecticut’s ‘Wooster School’ before graduating from ‘Tufts University’ with a B.A. in Anthropology and African studies. She busked while attending Tufts in Harvard Square and MBTA Red Line stations.

Career

While a student at Tufts, Chapman continued to perform in front of an audience and frequently composed songs that dealt with contemporary topics. After learning about her lyrics and abilities, Brian Koppelman, whose father founded the independent music publishing business SBK, attended her performance. After watching her perform, he informed his dad about her and spent 6 months convincing her to sign a record deal with Elektra Records. In 1988, she dropped her first album, “Tracy Chapman,” which received positive reviews from critics. It peaked at number one on the Billboard album charts after selling over a million copies in less than two weeks.

The most well-known song from the album was “Fast Car,” which reached no. 6 on the charts. Other songs from the album that was successful on the charts included “Baby Can I Hold You” and “Talkin’ ’bout A Revolution”  She received three trophies and 7 Grammy nominations. It is still one of the best-selling albums of all time. Her 1989 album, “Crossroads,” peaked at number 9 on the Billboard album chart despite not enjoying the same popularity or critical praise as her debut. In this album, her songs were darker and more socially and politically aware. Chapman adopted a new position as a co-producer for her second album.

“Matters of the Heart,” her 3rd album, was released in 1992. It garnered mixed reviews from critics and reached position 53 on the Billboard album chart. For her song “Give Me One Reason,” which peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, she was nominated for three awards, including the Grammy for Best Rock Song.

She sang the track on “Saturday Night Live” six years before the album was released. There was a lot of backlash directed at her use of the digeridoo in the album’s lead song. Chapman studied the digeridoo at ‘Digeridoo University’ even though Aboriginal women could not play the instrument. As a result, she is qualified to judge cultural propriety. She went five years without recording when “New Beginning” was released.
