Russell Brand was born in Grays, England on June 4, 1975. The only child of photographer Barbara Elizabeth and Ronald Brand, his parents separated when he was just six months old; his mother raised him. He had a rough childhood and suffered from a range of mental health issues as a child.

When Brand was 8, his mother was diagnosed with breast and uterine cancer. He used to stay with his relatives while his mother was undergoing her treatment. Later, Brand suffered from bulimia nervosa; at age 16, he left his mother’s home due to differences with his mother’s partner.
