Born on June 19, 1948, Phylicia Rashad is an African American actress, director and singer who is dean of the College of Fine Arts at Howard University. For her role in “A Raisin in the Sun,” she became the first African American actress to win the 2004 Tony Award for best actress. She was the child of poet and Pulitzer Prize nominee Vivian Ayers Allen and professional dentist Andrew Arthur Allen.

Her character ‘Claire Huxtable’ in the NBC sitcom “The Cosby Show” is the most remembered, running for eight years. Her work in the series gave her more attention; also, she was nominated for two Emmy Nominations.

On June 19, 1948, Actress, stage director, and singer Phylicia Rashad was born in Texas, U.S.A. Her Parents divorced when she was six years old. In 1970, she graduated from Howard University with a B.F.A. degree. After Graduation, she found work in New York City with the Negro Ensemble Company.

Career

In 1972, she appeared on Broadway; after that, she had minor roles in “The Wiz” and “Dream-girls” (hit musicals) before entering television. In 2003, she appeared in August Wilson’s “Gem of the Ocean,” playing the role of ‘Aunt Ester,’ which critics admired.

In 1978, trying something new, Rashad released a disco concept album “Josephine Superstar,” an album based on Josephine Baker’s life. She got Day-Night success from “The Cosby Show,” where she played the role of attorney Clair Huxtable telecasted on NBC sitcom from 1984 to 1992. In the show, Bill Cosby starred in the lead role, whereas Rashad played the role of his wife. The series telecasted for about eight years and received a spectacular response from the audience. Clair Huxtable’s role not only gave her success but also two-time nominations for Emmy Awards.
