Early Life

Lindsey Graham is a South Carolina native born in Seneca on July 9, 2005. His parents were Florence and Millie. He has one sister, Darline. According to a childhood friend, Graham lived with his family in a “cramped space behind their business” and then moved into a trailer. At 21, his mother expired, and his father passed away fifteen months later. His sister adopted Graham after his mother expired. So, the service permitted Lindsey to join the South Carolina university in Columbia; hence He could also be close to his family and take care of his adopted sister, whom he adopted. Lindsey became a Pi Kappa Phi social fraternity member during his studies. In 1973, He graduated from Daniel High School. In 1977, Lindsey received his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina, and in 1981, his J.D. from South Carolina University.

Career

After graduation, Lindsey was commissioned as a judge advocate as well as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. He was placed on active duty and sent to Europe as a military prosecutor. He finally entered private practice as a lawyer.

Military Service

Lindsey joined the U.S. Air Force as an active member in 1982 & served until 1988. After his departure, Lindsey joined the South Carolina Air National Guard or the United State Air Force Reserve. During the Gulf War, he served at McEntire Air Guard Station as a judge advocate in South Carolina. Lindsey assisted in briefing departing pilots about the laws of war. Later, he transferred from the Air National Guard into the Air Force Reserve. At a White House ceremony in 2004 by President George W. Bush, Lindsey was promoted to Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

Lindsey served as an active duty reservist in April and two weeks in Aug 2007, where he worked on rule-of-law and detainee issues. In 2014, Lindsey was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service as a Senior Legal Advisor to the Air Force in Iraq & Afghanistan from August 2009 to July 2014. He oversaw the detention of military prisoners.

Lindsey was against President Barack Obama’s health reform legislation. He opposed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of Dec 2009 and the Education Reconciliation and Health Care Act of 2010. Lindsey is a cosponsor of the Healthy Americans Act. On the Senate floor in 2013, Lindsey criticized President Obama, both major political parties, for allowing the budget cut to take place with “two-thirds of the budget” exempted from reductions. He also stated that the Department of Defense’s impact would lead to a “hollow army” that “invites aggression. “Democrat Jaime Harrison challenged Graham in the 2020 Senate election. Unexpectedly, the race was very competitive. Many polls over the past few months showed it to be close. Harrison also had record-breaking fundraising numbers.
