Leonardo was born to a poor Milanese family on May 22, 1935. His father was a fruit and vegetable vendor but died before Leonardo’s birth. His mother already had 4 children; she could not grow Leonardo independently, so she admitted him to the orphanage. Unfortunately, his childhood was not better. When he was 14, circumstances forced him to work to help his low-income family. His first job was as a trainee at a tool manufacturer in Milan.
