Early Life

Early on in his life, Kevin Gates experienced several obstacles. He had been taken into custody when he was just 13 for taking part in a car theft. His father passed away from AIDS about a year later when he was just 14 years old. At the age of 22, he spent another nearly three years behind bars. He completed a psychology master’s degree program in jail at that period. After being released, he tried his hand at going to community college but left after a short time.

Career

Gates planned to begin his career as a rapper as soon as he received his diploma from Baton Rouge Community College. When Kevin joined the record company Dead Game Records in 2005, he started his career.

He issued two mixtapes in 2008 with the titles Pick of Da Litter and All or Nothing. “A lot of pain… a lot of true stories,” was how Gates described his two mixtapes.

Music has always been a huge love for Gates. In 2012, he joined Lil Wayne’s record company Young Money Entertainment, which helped his career take off. Gates never agreed to a record contract with Young Money despite being signed.

Gates put out a number of mixtapes in 2013, and he later joined forces with Atlantic Records. Jamie Foxx, 2 Chainz, and Ty Dolla Signis are well-known rappers with whom he has worked.

He became famous after publishing The Luca Brasi Story. Also, the mixtape reached No. 17 on the Billboard 200. He received his 3rd consecutive Billboard 200 listing with the release of his 13th mixtape.

Gates and his wife Dreka Haynes, have had two children together since they got married. He revealed in 2015 that his firstborn daughter was also named Islah, which is the Arabic word for “to make better” and the title of his debut studio album.

Gates released many well-known songs during that year, including Really Really, 2 Phones, and Time for That. The album sold over 112,000 copies in its first week and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 list thanks to the commercial success of his singles.

Since then, he has produced a number of mixtapes and albums, which have collectively sold millions of copies worldwide. In the hip-hop industry, some of the most well-known rappers have worked with Gates.

Favorite Quote 2 from Kevin Gates

“Wealth is not of the pocket. It’s of the heart. It’s of the mind. I live like that. You could give me a fish and feed more for a day, but if you teach me to fish, you’ve fed me forever. So that’s really my philosophy with it all.”

Favorite Quote 3 from Kevin Gates

“Whatever an individual chooses to do with themselves, long as it doesn’t affect me and they’re respectful with it, I don’t care what they do. Because I’m not perfect and I have flaws, so who would I be to be judgmental?”

Favorite Quote 4 from Kevin Gates

“If I tell the truth about me, what can the world say? I’d love to be accepted, but I’m not seeking acceptance. If you are a fan, it’s because you’re a fan of who I am psychologically, emotionally, and individually. The world can relate to a human being more than it can relate to a superstar.”
