Early Life

David Benioff’s birth name is David Friedman, born in New York City, US on September 25, 1970. Being the youngest of three children in the family, David Benioff has two older sisters. Belonging to a Jewish family, he has roots in Austria, Germany, Romania, Poland, and Russia. David’s father, Stephen Friedman, is a prior head of Goldman Sachs, and his mother’s name is Barbara (née Benioff). He had a membership of the Sphinx Senior Society and Phi Delta Alpha Fraternity during his graduation days at Dartmouth College. Later in 1995, he studied Irish Literature at Trinity College, Dublin, where he met D.B Weiss.

Benioff spent almost a year in Moose, Wyoming, after returning to the US. He used this time as a writing getaway while working a second job as a radio D.J. to support himself. David then enrolled in the Creative Writing Program of the University of California Irvine after he read the work of Michael Chabon’s “The Mysteries of Pittsburgh.” He graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing in 1999. Initially, he began writing as Jacqueline Benioff, his pen name, his mother’s initials, to avoid confusion with other writers named David. Since 2010, for legal purposes, his copyright filing lists him as ‘David Benioff Friedman.’

Career

Plume Publishers published Benioff’s first book in 2001, titled “The 25th Hour”. It took him around two years to finish it. Based on the book, he already started working on a screenplay, resulting in the movie, “25th Hour,” in December 2002, which marked his debut as a screenplay writer. This film, which Spike Lee directed, featured Rosario Dawson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Edward Norton.  In 2004, Viking book published Benioff’s short story collection named “When the Nines Rolls Over (with its other stories).” He also wrote the script for the psychological thriller “Stay” in 2005, directed by Marc Forster and starring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts.

Benioff was interested in adapting George R.R. Martin’s novel series “A Song of Ice and Fire”, which he did in 2006. In 2004, he worked on the screenplay for “Wolverine: X – Men Origins (2009)” and collaborated with Hugh Jackman (Actor) on the first version of the script. Later, Fox roped in Skip Wood to revise this story as they thought the writing was “darker and a bit more brutal.” He also wrote “Brothers’” which was released the same year and was directed by Jim Sheridan. David is one of the writers involved in “The Gemini Man” a Will Smith film.

David developed the screenplay based on Greek Epic Cycle, a mythological war film, “Troy” for Warner Bros, as they paid him a sum of US $ 2.5 Mn. The film was realized in 2004 and directed by Wolfgang Petersen. In 2005, his following screenplay was for “Stay,” a Psychological thriller directed by Marc Forster. They again collaborated in 2007 for “The Kite Runner” from Khaled Hosseini’s novel of the same name. In 2007, he was nominated for BAFTA and a Golden Globe for this screenplay.

His script for “The Kite Runner” in 2007, modified from the novel of the identical name, marked his 2nd teamwork with Forster. He along with Weiss began to work together on “Game of Thrones”. HBO put the pilot “Winter Is Coming” into development in 2007. Viking, the same publisher, published David’s second novel ‘City of Thieves,’ his 3rd writing project in 2008. The series was then greenlit in 2010. Benioff, Weiss, and other writers served as showrunners. It began airing on HBO in 2011.

Benioff and Weiss announced on April 10, 2014, that they had finished their first feature film project. They both together were writing, produced, and directed “Dirty White Boys.” The film was based on Stephen Hunter’s novel. 21st Century Fox approved pre-production even though both producers and writers had other contractual obligations at the time. Although it was expected that “Dirty White Boys’” development would be slow, the film’s promotion didn’t just stop at the beginning. Kasey Moore claimed that it had been many years since anyone involved in “Dirty White Boys” updated the public on the project’s status.

Benioff and Weiss announced on July 19, 2017, that they would produce another HBO series, “Confederate,” following the conclusion of “Game of Thrones.” “Confederate” was not announced. It was met with anger by the public. Disney announced in 2018 that Weiss and Benioff would produce and write a fresh series of “Star Wars films” post the final season of GoT ended in 2019.
