Timeline
Early Life
California’s Burbank is where Howard was born on April 20, 1959, in the United States. On five episodes of The Andy Griffith Show when he was two years old, Howard made his acting debut alongside his older brother Ron, the show’s star. He played Leon, a little youngster in Mayberry who would silently offer visitors a taste of his sandwich as they replied, “No thanks, Leon.” He was dressed in cowboy attire.
Career
At age four, Clint Howard portrayed Mikey in the episode “The Gnu, Now Nearly Extinct” of the ABC medical drama Breaking Point in 1963. In The Fugitive’s season one episode, “Home is the Hunted,” he also appeared as Dr. Richard Kimble’s nephew, little Billy Taft.
Howard’s debut lead role was a regular on Gentle Ben (1967–69). Also, he portrayed Billy in John Steinbeck’s The Red Pony, which starred Henry Fonda and Maureen O’Hara. In an episode segment of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery, he played Herbie, a ten-year-old youngster who forecasts the near future.
On Arrested Development, Howard portrayed Johnny Bark in the 2003 episode “Key Choices,” which his brother Ron produced and narrated. In a “Married… with Children” episode, he appeared as a spooky janitor. In the Seinfeld episode “The Trip” from season four, he played the auto thief/murderer, Tobias Lehigh Nagy. Howard appeared as a guest star in the season three episode of Heroes.
Clint portrayed a young partygoer standing atop a table during his birthday party in his film debut, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father (1963). Together with Hathi Jr. in The Jungle Book, Howard also provided the voices of Roo in the Disney animated cartoons Winnie the Pooh as well as the Blustery Day and Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree, which were ultimately included in The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
Howard had appeared in seventeen films made by his brother Ron Howard, including the short film Old Paint, which Ron directed for the first time when Clint was ten. He also played the lead role in Grand Theft Auto, Ron’s debut full-length film. John Dexter in Cocoon, Paul in Gung Ho (both TV series and film), Lou in Parenthood, Doctor Ricco in Backdraft, Flynn in Far and Away, Ken in EDtv, and Whobris in How the Grinch Stole Christmas are some of the other characters in the older Howard’s movies.
In addition, he portrayed Herbert Trimpy in The Dilemma, Lloyd Davis in Frost/Nixon, Sheriff Purdy in The Missing, and Paul Lucas in the episodes “We Interrupt This Program” and “Spider” of the HBO, which Ron also produced.
In 1981, Howard started The Kempsters, a new wave rock and roll band primarily made up of his Kemp Street neighbors and friends. Madame Wong’s West hosted regular performances by the band. The group disbanded in 1983. The Kempsters never put out an album while they were together. Still, recently Howard started selling No Brains At All, a CD that includes four songs they recorded in separate studios and seven songs they recorded live on October 17, 1982, at Madame Wong’s West.
In the film Nobody Gets Out Alive, written and directed by Jason Christopher, he also played Dr. Owen and Sanders. His brother Ron, who directed Solo: A Star Wars Story, included him.

Favorite Quotes from Clint Howard
“One of my earliest memories is being inside the recording studio and I see the shadow of a figure that looks an awful lot like Walt Disney. Then the door opened and Mr. Disney walked in and said, ‘Hi Clint.’ I won’t ever forget that.”
– Clint Howard
“People don’t realize that doing a horror movie is hard work. You’re out there all day screaming your lungs out, breathing in toxic make-up fumes, rolling around in the dirt, getting your eyebrows burned off – it’s not like doing a sitcom.”
– Clint Howard
“I don’t act because I love doing it, I act because it’s my job. At the end of the year, I gotta pay my taxes, bills, doctors, insurance, car insurance, the occasional vacation. It’s a wonderful job. The upside is that it is exciting and different… the downside is that it is an extremely insecure job.”
– Clint Howard
“There’s always gonna be people with a lot of money making film, and the goal is to make profit and carry on. It is a business. The goal is to make a living doing it and to be comfortable.”
– Clint Howard
“And as an actor – or even as a person in the industry – if you’re unwilling to change, you’re just going to get swamped. You’ve got to be flexible, and you’ve got to go with the flow. That’s what I try to do as an actor.”
