Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán was born in Guadalajara, Mexico on July 18, 1990. When he was five, his family shifted to Juanacatlan. Saúl, the youngest child in the family, has seven siblings, out of which six are professional boxers. He had a particular interest in riding hours at a young age.

Canelo followed in his brother’s footsteps and began boxing at 13. Canelo’s amateur record was immediately inspiring, and they earned a silver medal at Mexican Junior Championship. Later he won the gold medal at the age of 15 at the Mexican Junior Championship.
