When Brandon was 12, he decided to drop some weight, so his mother registered his name in the homegrown Entram Gym, and he started training in mixed martial arts. Despite his previous goals to graduate from law school and become a legal counselor, Brandon decided to concentrate on his mixed martial art training. He trained extensively throughout his teenage years and began competing at the amateur level.
