Early Life

Elisabeth Anne Bisceglia, who became Betty Broderick in 1947, was born & raised in Bronxville situated in New York. She was 3rd child of Marita & Frank Bisceglia, devout Roman Catholics who managed a prosperous plastering business through the partnership of the family members. Mother was Irish, while father was an Italian American.

All of the Bisceglia children had high expectations because their parents were very strict.  She described, “Go to Catholic schools, be careful with dating until you meet a Catholic guy, support him though he works, & be blessed in your older years with lovely children.” This is how Broderick subsequently recalled that she had been raised to be a housewife since the day she was born.

In 1965, Broderick completed studies at Hartsdale, New York’s Maria Regina High School. Mount Saint Vincent College was the place from where she earned her diploma. The Bronx after completing an accelerated early childhood education program. Her credits allowed her to minor in English.

Relationships & Marriage

At the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, Elizabeth (Betty) & Dan Broderick (1944-1989), her future husband, were introduced in 1965. Dan, the eldest child of a sizable Irish Catholic family, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. On April 12th, 1969, the couple exchanged vows at the Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe, New York. Kim, the couple’s first child, was already inside Betty when she returned from their honeymoon. 4 additional children were born by her: Lee (born in 1971), Daniel (born in 1976), Rhett (born in 1979), & an unidentified boy who passed away 4 days after his birth.


In San Diego’s Marston Hills area, close to Balboa Park, Betty Broderick made her way to Dan’s home at 1041 Cypress Avenue 8 months after purchasing a Smith & Wesson pistol & 7 months later after Dan & Linda got hitched. A key used by Betty, which she had taken from her offspring Lee is used to breaking into the house, the time when the couple was sleeping. In accordance with the law’s maximum penalty, Broderick received two consecutive sentences of 15 years to life in addition to 2 years for using a gun without a license. From the time when she committed the killings, she has been jailed.
