Early life

Warren Griffin III, well known by his stage name Warren G, was born on November 10, 1970, in Long Beach, California. Despite having three sisters, he is his parents’ lone child. Warren as well as his sisters lived in East Long Beach with their mother until Warren’s elementary school years came to an end after his parents divorced when he was just four years old. Warren Griffin, Jr. moved in with his father in North Long Beach just before he started middle school. He shared a home with his three step-siblings, who were from his step-first mother’s marriage. Andre Young, a future Dr. Dre and one of these step-siblings, was among them.

Warren was detained for a short period of time in jail when he was seventeen years old following a gun possession arrest. Following his release, his stepbrother Dre mentored him and taught him how to operate a drum machine. As a participant in the rap group N.W.A. at this time in 1988, Dre was starting to gain popularity. The Los Angeles region’s rap scene was greatly influenced by their 1987 self-titled debut album. Warren eventually began creating his own music after having to serve yet another jail sentence for drug deals and starting to work at the Long Beach shipyards.

Career

Rapper Warren formed the group 213, along with Snoop Dogg (Calvin Broadus) and Nate Dogg (Nathaniel Hale), in 1990. The group was given its name after the original Los Angeles area code (213) that also served their hometown of Long Beach. Unfortunately, all three of them ran into legal trouble and had to serve time in jail, which inspired them to find employment and pursue their musical endeavors on the side. The trio was once permitted to practice and record in a back room of the V.I.P. record shop. Snoop cut the demo for “Super Duper Snooper” here, and Warren later played it for Dre at a party. All three accepted Dre’s invitation to his studio, where they worked with Snoop on his first solo studio album, “The Chronic” (1992). The Hard Way was the only studio album that 214 released as a unit (2004).

Warren chose to hone his musical skills primarily outside of Dre’s influence, though he did contribute music to a number of projects with Dre. Warren took a risk and created artists like MC Breed and 2Pac. His 1993 vocal partnership with Mista Grimm, “Indo Smoke,” which was featured on the soundtrack for the movie “Poetic Justice,” provided a break (1993). Warren G soon after began work on his debut album for Violator Records. The big hit “Regulate” came from the 1994 album “Regulate…G Funk Era.” The song “Regulate” was released as a single and appeared on the soundtrack for the 1994 movie “Above the Rim.” The album was propelled to the same position on the Billboard charts after it quickly became a huge hit, peaking at #2. The album eventually achieved triple platinum status, and the number-one hit “This D.J.” became his second Top 10 hit.

In March 1997, “Take a Look Over Your Shoulder,” his second album was made available. The RIAA certified it as Gold in May of that year after it sold 500,000 copies. In October 1999, “I Want It All,” his third album, was released. On “I Want It All,” which was primarily produced by Warren, there are vocalists and guest performers like Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, RBX, Slick Rick, Eve, Kurupt, and Jermaine Dupri. The RIAA awarded it a Gold certification in November 1999. The Return of the Regulator, his fourth studio album, was released in December 2011. George Clinton and Dr. Dre worked together to produce the album. His final release on a significant record label was the dud “The Return of the Regulator,” which failed to yield any hit singles. He later left Universal Music Group and started working for the independent record company Hawino Records.
