Early life

Ryan Stiles, the fifth child and youngest, was born to Canadian parents Sonny and Irene Stiles in Seattle. He was raised with his mother, a housewife, and his father, a supervisor at a Canadian fish processing facility in Vancouver. When he was ten years old, his parents relocated to Vancouver, British Columbia. Stiles has acknowledged that, despite being a good student, “being a high-school senior provided [him] an inordinate amount of independence.” He became so frantic with his flexible schedule that, at the age of seventeen, he left college a few months before graduating.

He was able to sustain himself by performing stand-up routines at bars close to his Vancouver home over his parents’ objections. He aided the establishment of ‘Punchlines Comedy Club’ by Rich Elwood. He served as both the host of Comedy College on CBC and the chief writer for The Don Harron Show on CTV during this time. Before joining the Second City comedy group at Expo 86, Stiles performed regularly in improv with the Vancouver Theatre Sports League and Punchlines’ “No Name Player.” In Toronto and later Los Angeles, he continued his acting career with Second City.

Career

The creators of the British improvisational comedy program “Whose Line Is It Anyway” had noticed Stiles by 1989. Up until the show’s cancellation in 1998, Stiles was a regular. He received critical acclaim for his performance on the show and developed a devoted fan base in the UK. American comedian Drew Carey asked Stiles to appear regularly on his sitcom The Drew Carey Show in 1995. Lewis Kiniski, Carey’s intelligent but unproductive best friend, was portrayed by Stiles.

Carey was successful in persuading ABC to produce an American edition of “Whose Line Is It Anyway” in 1998. After the British version’s final season aired in 1998, the American version debuted with Stiles and Carey listed as executive producers. For his work on the program, Stiles was nominated in 2002 for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program. The show frequently makes fun of Stiles’ flashy dress shoes.

Stiles participated in the filming of the unaired pilot episode of “Drew Carey’s Green Screen Show,” which featured improv games akin to Whose Line? played in front of a huge green screen, along with Kaitlin Olson, despite not making an appearance in the series. Later, animation was added to the improvised video.

In the summer of 2013, Stiles made a comeback as a performer and executive producer for “The CW’s” revival of Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Stiles played Mailman Farnham in the 1991 movie “Hot Shots!” and played Marine Rabinowitz in the 1993 follow-up, “Hot Shots! Part Deux.” He played Dr. Herb Melnick, a recurring character on “Two and a Half Men,” from 2004 until the show’s cancellation in 2015. “Mad TV,” “On Parker Lewis Can’t Lose,” “Mad About You,” “Murphy Brown,” and “Dharma & Greg,” he made brief cameos. He made a guest appearance as acting coach Sergeant Clift on Reno 911! in July 2008.

Stiles made several Nike commercials during the 1994 MLB lockout, hanging out in an empty ballpark while engaging in activities like playing the organ and attempting to do the wave by himself. The line that concluded the ads was: “Have fun. Please.”

Stiles made an appearance in the parody documentary “Conker: Celebrity Squirrel” which was created in 2005 to promote the Xbox game Conker: Live & Reloaded. Due to his performance in this role, gamers decided to induct him into the DK Vine Hall of Fame’s 2015 class.
