Early Life

RuPaul was born on Nov 17, 1960, in San Diego, California. His parents Ernestine and Irving Andrew Charles were from Louisiana. After divorcing his parents in 1967, he and his sisters lived with their mother. He went to Patrick Henry High school. At 15, he & his sister Renetta went to Atlanta to learn performing arts. During the 1980s, he worked in Plaza Theatre and struggled to be a filmmaker and musician. In 1982, he performed in “The American Music Show” and continued to perform for many years. He helped to create the “Star Booty” film. He worked as a bar dancer in a celebrity club Larry Tee. He also worked as a backstage dancer for Glen Mead more with drag queen Vaginal Davis. In 1989, he performed for The B-52 in the song Love Shack.

Career

In 1993, he released an album “Supermodel of the World” which was listed in 45th position on the Billboard Hot 100. His next two songs “A Shade Shady” and “Back to My Roots” were also hit. He did a contract with MAC Cosmetics.  He released an autobiography, “Lettin’ It All Hang Out”. He was a host of the talk show “The RuPaul Show” on VH1. In 1997, he released another album, “Ho Ho Ho”.

In 2002, he was a part of the “You’re No Lady” song along with Brigitte Nielsen. In 2004, he released “Red Hot”, his fourth album which did not receive much coverage. In 2006, he released his fifth album and first remix album “ReWorked”. In 2007, he played role in the movie “Starrbooty: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack”.

In March 2009, he released the album, Champion.  RuPaul’s Drag Race was produced in 2009.   In April 2011, corresponding with the last of season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, he released his sixth studio album Glamazon, created by Revolution, who earlier worked with RuPaul on his album Champion. In 2012, “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” premiered after large fan demand. In January 2014, RuPaul and Revolucion both finalized through their Instagram and Twitter accounts that they had been working on a seventh studio album. In April 2014, Ru-Paul co-hosts with longtime best friend and fellow RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage. In March 2015, he released “Realness”, an eighth studio album. In April 2016, a new show on Logo television called “Gay for Play Game Show Starring RuPaul” premiered.

In July 2016, he was nominated for the “Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program”. In 2017, he was the subject of different controversies regarding actions toward transgender. In March 2017, he released his eleventh studio album, “American”. In 2018, he was one of the actors who utter the voice book the day in the life of Marlon Bundo. In 2020, a kind of Australian soldier fly was named Opaluma RuPaul.
