Early Life

Rivers Cuomo was born in Manhattan, New York, on June 13, 1970, to German-English mother Beverly Schoenberger and Italian father Frank Cuomo. The only known sibling of Cuomo is James Anthony Kitts.

Until his father and mother divorced in 1975, Cuomo was raised in Rochester, New York, at the Rochester Zen Center. He relocated to Yogaville, an ashram in Pomfret, Connecticut, with his mother. Shortly later, River’s mother wed Stephen Kitts again.

When Yogaville relocated to Virginia in 1980, when Cuomo was about 10 years old, the (now) Kitts Family chose to remain in Connecticut. They settled in the Storrs Mansfield region, where Rivers and his brother enrolled at E.O. Smith High School and Mansfield Middle School, respectively. At school, Rivers participated in the high school choir and theatre club, playing the role of Johnny Casino in a performance of Grease.

Rivers used the name “Peter Kitts” while still in high school. He changed back to Rivers Cuomo after graduating.

Career

Musical Influences and Early Career

From a young age, Rivers was enthralled by the sounds of heavy metal and hook-driven punk-pop (the Pixies). For his 14th birthday, his mother gave him his first guitar, a Stratocaster replica. After starting the band Fury, Rivers composed his debut song, “Fight For Your Right,” a heavy metal anthem in the vein of Kiss. In September 1984, Fury performed their debut performance.

One year after the founding of Fury, Cuomo changed the group’s name to Avant Garde, a glam metal outfit, to play heavier metal more in line with his tastes. Throughout high school, Cuomo led Avant Garde and is credited with significantly influencing the band members.

Rivers and Avant Garde relocated to Los Angeles in 1989. The band performed several notable concerts there before deciding to alter their name to Zoom to become more marketable and specialized.

Rivers did not graduate while enrolled in the Guitar Institute since he was not attending classes.

Songs like “Anything for You,” “You Overpower Me,” and “Xmas in L.A.,” a musical letter about spending Christmas away from home, were written by Rivers during this period.

Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, and Scottie Chapman established the Fuzz band to perform his new compositions. After disbanding, the band adopted the name 60 Incorrect Sausages.

Together, Cuomo and Patrick Wilson wrote songs like “The Pop Screen” and “What’s Going On,” as well as his compositions like “Sing to Me Slow” and “I Have So Many Issues.” The foundation of 60 Incorrect Sausages was built on these early tunes. Cuomo recorded the Cholesterol EP with 60 Incorrect Sausages.

Kevin Ridel’s Christian rock band, The Truth, also received recording assistance from Cuomo. Cuomo, who worked primarily as an engineer, contributed guitar and backup vocals to songs including “My Salvation,” “Eyes of the Children,” and “I Belong to God.”

Weezer

Weezer was founded by Cuomo, guitarist Jason Cropper, drummer Patrick Wilson, and bassist Matt Sharp, in 1992 while they were all students at Los Angeles Community College. Cuomo’s father gave him the moniker “Weezer” as a nickname.

Weezer got a record deal with DGC, a division of Geffen Records, in June 1993.

In May 1994, Weezer issued their self-titled debut album. Due to the blue background on the record cover, this album would become known as the “Blue Album.” Brian Bell replaced Cropper after he departed the band while recording the album. The Blue Album, which Ric Ocasek of The Cars produced, was certified platinum on January 1, 1995, after selling over a million copies. Around 3 million album copies were eventually sold in the States, and 15 million were sold globally.

While Weezer’s early fame was at its height in 1995, Rivers decided to enroll at Harvard University to pursue a degree in classical composition. He eventually concluded that he genuinely didn’t like modern classical music and missed traveling and producing with Weezer. Two semesters before graduating from Harvard, Rivers left the school.

Weezer released their second album, “Pinkerton,” in September 1996. It would take 20 years until this album received the platinum certification.

After “Pinkerton,” Weezer took a three-year break. Cuomo re-enrolled in Harvard during his vacation. His formal education wouldn’t be over until 2004.

Later, Weezer released additional albums, including “Everything Will Be Alright in the End,” “Pacific Daydream,” “White Album,” “Black Album,” “OK Human,” “Teal Album,” “Van Weezer,” “Green Album,” “Maladroit,” “Make Believe,” “Red Album,” and “Raditude.”

Weezer has sold over 35 million records globally and over 10 million in the US as of this writing.
