Timeline
Early Life
On July 11, 1959, Richard Sambora was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. The future rock star began playing the accordion at age 6, his first instrument. After Jimi Hendrix’s passing, he began studying to play the guitar at 12. Sambora is also proficient in the piano, saxophone, bass guitar, and drums. He performed his debut at a Catholic Youth Organization dance as a teenager. Sambora went to Woodbridge High School and played basketball there. As a sophomore, Sambora’s high school team won the New Jersey State Title in 1975. In 1977, Sambora received his high school diploma.
Career
Sambora formerly played in Message, which released its self-titled debut album in 1982. 1995 and 2000 saw new releases of the record. By the age of 19, Sambora also had his own record company, Dream Disc Records, and was a co-owner of a club in New Jersey. Early in the 1980s, he embarked on his first professional tour as Joe Cocker’s opening act. Just before joining Bon Jovi in 1983, Sambora tried vainly to replace Ace Frehley in KISS.
Dave Sabo, Bon Jovi’s first lead guitarist, was replaced by Richie Sambora. Sambora approached Jon following a Bon Jovi concert to show his enthusiasm and suggest they work together. Jon invited Richie to a band practice after the two became fast friends. When Jon finally showed up, Sambora had already arrived for the session, and the band sounded better than they had without Richie. Sambora was immediately employed.
In 1984 and 1985, Bon Jovi published their first two albums, and with the 1986 publication of their third album, “Slippery When Wet,” Bon Jovi achieved international popularity. Three of Bon Jovi’s most well-known songs came from that album: “Living on a Prayer,” “You Give Love a Bad Name,” and “Wanted Dead or Alive,” the latter two of which reached the top of the charts. The band’s “Slippery When Wet” album continues to be their most popular one. The world was introduced to the band’s next singles, among them “Lay Your Hands On Me,” “Born to Be Your Baby,” and “I’ll Be There For You,” on the album “New Jersey.”
As of the time of this writing, Bon Jovi has put out 14 studio albums, including “The Circle (2009),” “Lost Highway (2007),” “Have a Nice Day (2005),” “Bounce (2002)” “Crush (2000),” “These Days (1995),” “Keep the Faith (1992),” “New Jersey (1988),” “Slippery When Wet (1986),” “7800° Fahrenheit (1985),” “Bon Jovi (1984).”
The primary songwriters for the band were Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi. Sambora quit the group before a Calgary show on the Because We Can Tour in 2013 and has since only performed with Bon Jovi once, at their 2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction.
In addition to his gigs with Bon Jovi, Richie has published three solo albums: “Stranger in This Town” from 1991, “Undiscovered Soul” from 1998, and “Aftermath of the Lowdown” from 2012. Richie Sambora has collaborated on nearly 40 Top 40 hits, 20 Top 10 singles, and four #1 hit singles.
