Early Life

In the village of Kenova, West Virginia, Michael W. Smith was born. His mother worked as a church secretary and caterer, and his father was an employee of an oil plant. His two early loves were baseball and music. Ten years after converting to Christianity, he relocated to Nashville. He met Debbie in 1981, the same year he started performing with a Christian band named “Higher Ground.” They began dating in June, and they were wed in September.

After going through a depression, he finally gave his life to Christ in November 1979. On the second day, he attended a keyboardist interview with Highground, a brand-new contemporary Christian music (CCM) band. Many CCM radio stations played the song “I Was” with his lead vocals. Smith was able to leave drugs and alcohol behind him on his first tour with Higher Ground, which has mostly been hosted in churches.
