L.L. Cool J was born in New York on January 14, 1968. He suffered a series of disturbing events during his childhood. When he was four years old, he observed his father shooting his grandfather and mother. He fell in love with music when he was nine years old. He was penning lyrics and creating songs using some D.J. equipment that his grandpa had given him. His current stage name, L.L., was created by him and one of his best friends when he was fifteen. He appeared in various shows like Rollerball, “Deliver Us from Eva”, S.W.A.T and “Minehunters”. He appeared in the NBC comedy “In The House” as well. In 1995, with the album “Mr. Smith” he made a comeback.
Boys II Men appeared on several tracks on the album, and “The Lady in My Life” by Michael Jackson was also covered. The music video would land LL a Grammy and become one of the first hip-hop videos ever to air on VH1. More than 2 million copies of this album were sold. His following album was Phenomenon, which went platinum and debuted at number one on the Billboard album charts. In 2000, he released G.O.A.T., which also went platinum.
