Biography
In Minneapolis, Minnesota, a 46-year-old man of African American descent named George Floyd was murdered by Derek Michael Chauvin, a former police officer who was born on March 19, 1976. Chauvin worked for the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) from 2001 to 2020. On May 25, 2020, Chauvin and three other officers arrested Floyd, who was handcuffed and was lying on the ground with his face down and screaming, “I can’t breathe” for nearly nine minutes and died shortly after that. On May 26, Derek was fired from the MPD, and on 29th May, he was taken into custody. Following the murder, protests broke out in Twin Cities and other parts of the United States, then extending to the rest of the world.
Chauvin was put on trial before a jury in the Minnesota Fourth Judicial District Court on March 8, 2021, for unintended second-degree murder, murder of third-degree, and manslaughter of second-degree. He received a conviction for the counts on 20th April. He was given a sentence of twenty-two and half years of prison time, on June 25, with the possibility of a supervised release based on factors like good behavior after serving the two-thirds of his sentence (the sentence before any deductions of time), or his sentence of 15 years for this second-degree murder conviction. Chauvin pleaded guilty to charges in December 2021 to federal accusations of exploiting Floyd’s civil rights by employing violence. And also ignoring Floyd’s critical medical requirements.
Early Life
In 1976, on March 19, Chauvin was born. His father was a qualified public accountant, while his mother was a stay-at-home mom. At the age of seven, his parents got divorced and were given joint custody. Chauvin enrolled in Park High School, Minnesota, but dropped out before graduating. He eventually earned a GED. He worked as a prep cook at McDonald’s and a buffet restaurant, where he obtained a certificate in quantity food preparation. Between 1996 and 2004, he served for a few years in the United States Army Reserve, including two terms in the military police. He completed his further education at Inver Hills Community College. Later, he shifted to Metropolitan State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement.
Career
In 2001, Chauvin started working for the MPD in Minneapolis. He participated in three police shootings while in the workforce, among which one resulted in death. He was awarded a medal for bravery in the year 2006 for participating in a shootout with a suspect brandishing a shotgun at other officers. Chauvin received a second in the year 2008 for breaking down a door and shooting a suspect, who had reached to retrieve his gun during a domestic violence incident. After he and his partner had tackled a fleeing criminal brandishing a gun in 2008, he was awarded a commendation medal. Following his off-duty security guard work for a nightclub in 2009, Chauvin was awarded a commendation medal.
The Murder Case
Chauvin along with three other officers was there to arrest George Floyd on suspicion of using fake US$ 20 bills on May 25, 2020. There was no resistance from Floyd to the arrest as seen on security footage from a nearby store as opposed to the statement. Derek knelt on George’s neck for more than nine minutes, after he was handcuffed and lay face down on the street. The body camera footage showed Floyd continuously repeating that he could not breathe and for the last two minutes, he has no pulse and was motionless. Derek was suspended from the department the following day after the video of the incident went viral over the internet. And was arrested on May 29th, 2020. Hennepin County Attorney, Mike Freeman charged him with third-degree murder, and the lesser included offense of second-degree manslaughter.
The trial began on March 8, 2021, at the Hennepin County Government Center, where a jury incorporating six white people and an equal number of colored people, found Derek guilty on 3 different counts unintentional second-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter, and third-degree murder. On June 25, 2021, Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and a half years of imprisonment. The earliest parole date for Derek would be in 2035 or 36 when he’ll be close to the age of 60. After this case, Derek was also charged with Tax Evasion Charges along with his ex-wife Kellie.
