Bob Newhart is an actor and comedian from the United States. He is famous for his deadpan and slight stammer in his delivery style. Newhart was first known for his 1960 album of humorous monologues, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart. This album, which reached number one on the pop album charts, remains the 20th most-sold comedy album.

Later, Newhart forayed into acting. He starred as Robert Hartley, a Chicago psychologist, in the Bob Newhart Show in the 1970s. Dick Loudon, a Vermont innkeeper, was featured on the 1980s series Newhart. He was the librarian head of Judson in The Librarian in 2004. This character was continued on TV’s The Librarians in 2014.

George Robert Newhart (birth name) was born in Oak Park on September 5, 1929. Bob was raised alongside his three sisters. As a young man, he attended Catholic schools around Chicago, including St. Ignatius College. Newhart attended Loyola University of Chicago after he graduated from the latter in 1952 with a bachelor of business administration degree.

Bob was drafted into the United States Army upon leaving college. While he did serve during the Korean War, Bob never left the United States. Instead, he worked as a personnel supervisor. After his discharge in 1954, he enrolled in law school but did not finish his degree.

Career

His 1960 comedy album The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. It also reached number two on the UK Albums Charts.

Newhart hosted The Entertainers in the mid-1960s along with Carol Burnett, and Caterina Valente. He also appeared in “How to Get Rid of Your Wife” on The Alfred Hitchcock Hour in 1963 & on The Judy Garland Show in 1995. Newhart hosted Saturday Night Live twice between 1980 & 1995. He appeared in 1964 at Royal Variety Performance. This was before Queen Elizabeth II.

Newhart began acting as a character actor in addition to stand-up comedy. He also acted in series, like Bob Hope Presents Chrysler Theatre, Captain Nice (two episodes), and It’s Garry Shandling’s Show (two episodes). He appeared again as Dr. Bob Hartley, as well as himself on Murphy Brown.
