Stacey Plaskett is a well-known American politician, attorney, and political commentator representing the Large Congressional District Virgin Islands in the United States House of Representatives. She has served four consecutive terms in Congress. As a political appointee, she was the counsel for the assistant attorney General for the Civil Division and the acting deputy assistant for the Torts Branch.

Plaskett worked for James Comey and Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson. Plaskett was then a deputy general counsel at United Health Group and later moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands to work in the private sector and with the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority. Plaskett received her bachelor’s degree at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. She worked as a Delegate Ron de Lugo after she graduated. She worked as a lobbyist for the House. Plaskett earned her law degree at American University and worked as a prosecutor.

Plaskett was later counseled to the U.S. House of Representatives Ethics Committee and as senior counsel to the U.S. Justice Department deputy attorney general. Plaskett also served as general counsel to the U.S. Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority. She is now a private practitioner.

Early Life

Plaskett was born in Brooklyn, New York, on May 13, 1966, and spent her childhood in the Bushwick housing projects. Her parents are from the U.S. Virgin Islands of Saint Croix; Her dad was a New York City Police Division official, and her mom was a representative in the court framework. During her childhood, her family traveled to Saint Croix frequently, exposing her to the customs and culture of the island. Students and other recent migrants from the Virgin Islands frequently stayed at the residence of her parents in New York. Grace Lutheran Elementary and Brooklyn Friends School, both Quaker schools, she attended. A Better Chance, Inc., a non-profit organization that helps minority students get into selective secondary schools, hired her. She attended Choate Rosemary Hall as a boarding student and was a leading athlete and class president for several years.

Career

Plaskett was a student representative for Georgetown on a progressive student ticket. She was also active in the Anti-Apartheid Movement. She was a student and spoke for universities in DC at the General Assembly of the United Nations.

In 1994, she received her J.D. from the American University Washington College of Law. While working full-time at Jones Day, she attended law school at night. She attended American University Washington College of Law in the evenings while she worked for the American Medical Association, and later joined the law firm Jones Day. She began her private practice career and became a staff member of Ron De Lugo, the former Virgin Islands Delegate.

From 1994 to 1997, she was the Assistant District Attorney in Bronx County. From 2002 to 2004, she worked at the U.S. Department of Justice and the House Committee on Ethics. She was the general counsel of the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority from 2007 to 2014.

Plaskett, after a failed first attempt in 2012, won her second bid to be Delegate to the US Virgin Islands. She defeated Donna Christensen, who had previously served nine terms. She is currently a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Committee on Agriculture. She is a member of the Subcommittee on the Interior, Energy, and Environment. She is also a member of the Congressional Caribbean Caucus as well as the Congressional Black Caucus. She and Jonathan Buckney Small are former tennis players.
